Common Zoom Audio Problems & How to Fix Them | IR.

Zoom's help center can walk you through the troubleshooting steps in more detail. Zoom video conferencing consumes a good deal of bandwidth. During a meeting, your device is transmitting a complex set of data packets to the receiving device, and vice versa.

Slow internet causes poor quality video streaming, and buffering disconnection. So if your WiFi connection or cellular connection has even a slight fluctuation, it can cause high latency , and some of those data packets may get lost or interrupted in their journey. This results in audio cutting in and out, and lagging video. These problems can even lead to Zoom disconnecting altogether. Not the ideal situation when trying to conduct an important meeting.

Before you start your meeting or conference, it's a good idea to check your video and audio settings. You can do this by joining a test call. Zoom will test your speakers automatically. If you can't hear a ringtone, click on the drop-down menu and select No to switch your speakers until you hear the ringtone.

Then click Yes to continue to the 'access your microphone' test. Many enterprise organizations are heavy Zoom users. Obviously, all users joining a meeting need to be able to see and hear clearly from any device. Improving audio quality means improving any meeting outcome.

The best way to improve the audio quality on your Zoom calls is to use a high quality microphone and make sure it's set up properly. Computer audio meaning the microphone built into your laptop or webcam doesn't have the quality or fidelity of an independent microphone. As well as better audio quality, you can access your microphone more easily, positioning it, and yourself optimally for the best sound delivery.

Alternatively, a good quality headset will sound better than the microphone on your computer, and isolate your audio from background noise. Zoom gives you the option of how you connect your audio when you're joining a meeting. You can connect via your computer's audio, or by dialing into a phone number. You should choose the option that gives you the best sound quality, but only choose one, otherwise you'll experience unwanted echo.

Make sure to check that your microphone isn't picking up sound from your speaker if you are using an external speaker. Echo can also occur if you're too close to another person who is on the same Zoom call. With macOS , you can also find volume control options via the menu bar or System Preferences. Look to see if you can see an X next to the speaker icon.

If so, activate the speakers using the buttons or by tapping the speaker icon. Check the volume using the volume buttons on your smartphone. If you habitually set your smartphone to silent or vibrate, check the audio profile on Android or iOS to see if the sound is turned on. As simple as it sounds, rebooting often helps solve audio problems.

Want to see all participants on Zoom because multiple users are in a video conference? With the Zoom gallery view, you can quickly get an overview and see all participants even in large Zoom meetings. More precisely, up to 49 participants at once. Learn how it works and the differences between the desktop and mobile app here.

If you take part in lots of different video conferences, you might like to use a different name for each one. For video chats with friends or relatives, a nickname or first name is sufficient.

For official meetings, however, using your full name looks more professional. Recording a Zoom meeting is especially important for users who cannot attend a meeting, conference, or workshop for whatever reason. First, double-check that you aren't muted by either hovering your cursor over the screen or tapping it to reveal the mic icon. It should appear without a red slash through it. If you see the slash, just tap or click the icon to unmute yourself.

Make sure that the correct microphone is selected — if not, select the desired mic. After clicking the caret next to the mic icon, select Test speaker and microphone. If you don't see the option to join audio, tap the three dots in the bottom-right corner and select Disconnect Audio and then follow the above steps to rejoin.

You may also want to make sure Zoom has permission to use the microphone, which can be accessed through your phone settings. On an iPhone, navigate to the Zoom app within your settings, then make sure that the microphone option is toggled on. In this case, the issue is probably in your speakers, so be sure to check your selected speaker source and the volume levels on your device. Make sure the correct speaker is selected if not, select the correct speaker. If you don't see the Join Audio option, double-check that the speaker icon in the top-left corner of the screen doesn't have an "x" next to it ; if it does, tap the icon to enable the speaker.

If the sound is getting through, but the quality is subpar, there could be a few things going on:. In some cases, it's best to ask everyone to check that they mute themselves when not speaking.
